The hooded merganser is a small duck found in the northern half of the United States and southern Canada. IdentificationAdult MalesBoth males and females have a crest at the back of the head which can be expanded or contracted. In adult males, this crest has a large white patch, face and back are black with reddish-brown sides. The eyes are gold and the bill is dark with a yellow base. Adult FemalesAdult females have a reddish crest, with a grayish-brown body and head. Eyes are brownish buff. Uper bill is blackish green. Lower bill is orange or yellow.
