The American oystercatcher is a species of shorebird of the oystercatcher family. It is found on both coasts of the United States south to northern South America. IdentificationAdultsThe male and female American oystercatcher are similar in appearance. They are a large shorebird with a black head, large red bill, brown back and white underparts. They have stout dull pink legs. They have a bold white stripe in the wings and a white rump that is visible in flight.
