The American avocet is a large shorebird in the stilt family. It breeds in the mid-west and on the Pacific coast of North America. In winter it migrates to the southern Atlantic and Pacific coasts of Mexico and the United States.

Identification

Adults

Adult male and female American avocets are similar in appearance. They have long, thin, gray legs, black and white on the back with white on the underbelly. The neck and head are rusty colored in the summer (breeding plumage) and gray in the winter. The long, thin bill is upturned at the end.

Immature

Immature birds are similar to adults, but the head is colored light buff.
