Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus)
The killdeer is a medium-sized plover which can be found across most of Canada, the United States, and Mexico, with isolated populations in Costa Rica and in the Pacific coast of South America. IdentificationAdultsAdult male and female killdeer are similar in appearance. They have the characteristic plover shape with large, round head, large eye, and short bill. They are especially slender and lanky, with a long, pointed tail and long wings. They have brown-tan back and wings, and white below. The white breast is barred with two two black bands. The face and cap are brown with a white forehead. The tawny orange rump is conspicuous in flight. They have an orange-red eyering. ImmatureThe chicks are patterned almost identically to the adults.
