The Whimbrel is one of the most wide-ranging shorebirds in the world, breedings in the Arctic and migrating to South America, Africa, south Asia, and Australia.

Identification

Adults

Adult male and female Whimbrels are similar in appearance. They are a large shorebird, streaked and buffy overall, with a dark crown that has a distinct light stripe in the middle. They have a long, down-curved bill, a long neck and long legs.

Immature

The immature bird is similar to the adult but back with light spots, a less distinct crown stripe, more buffy breast and with finer streaking on neck and chest.
