The chipping sparrow is an American sparrow in the family Emberizidae. It is common across most of North American. IdentificationAdultsAdult male and female Chipping sparrows are similar in appearance. Non-breeding plumage is gray below and an orangish-rust color above with a brownish cap, a dusky eyebrow, and a dark eye-line. Breeding plumage is more prominently marked with a persimmon-red cap, a nearly white supercilium and black stripe running through the eye. ImmatureImmature birds are prominently streaked below with adark eye-line, extending both in front of and behind the eye. The brownish cap and dusky eyebrow are variable but generally obscure.
